Barrow Open Gardens Comes Up Roses Again!

Just as last year our talented gardeners battled the great British weather in order to ensure the village would put on a good show for our Open Gardens on Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th June. Saturday was definitely only for the wellies and brollies brigade and anyone determined to get their monies worth! But Sunday brought much needed sunshine and smiles all round as people from near and far came to see what a great array of gardens we have. The Open Gardens team were once again delighted to adopt Rainbows Hospice as their charitable cause.

Rainbows representative Gary Farnfield was on hand during the weekend and managed to visit all the gardens. He and Ivan Brookes were delighted to accept our cheque for £3,533 at our after-show VIP party generously hosted by Roger and Jo Chappell. This year, as well as money raised from the gardens, the charity also benefited from donations from talented locals; Glenda and Richard Philips sold delightful handmade bird feeders and garden accessories; Lin Webb deserves a medal for her efforts (do you ever sleep Lin?) and it’s obviously catching because her neighbour’s children, Mia, Flynn & Orla (all under 7) raised £33 from their pop-up sweetshop and Georgie their Mum, who is a chef, made artisan bread and raised another £40.

The Paper Shop/Post Office, Taylors Florist, Victoria Jane, The Co-Op & Feather & Fur kindly sold our programmes in the run up to the event. The Hunting Lodge, Lime Tree Nursery, the Methodist & Baptist Churches all provided additional parking. Our Gardening Club offered a wonderful selection of plants for sale in Memorial Square while just up the road Rainbows volunteers set up stall in the Roundhouse selling their range of gifts; this kind of support really made a huge difference to the weekend.

Over the years BOG has donated a grand total of £26,307 to Rainbows thanks to the openers and organisers – without the likes of Roger Chappell, Jeanette Hollis, Richard & Glenda Phillips & Lin Winter, BOG probably would not happen. We are always looking for new openers so do get in touch if you’d like to join in or find out more email: barrowog@gmail.com
