Barrow Runners - Couch to 5K

Running is increasing in popularity and as a well-established running club Barrow Runners felt that it would be good to encourage absolute beginners in the area to get into running, and hopefully, attract new members to the main group as their confidence grew.

The biggest challenge a beginner to running will face is not knowing how or where to start which is why the ‘Couch to 5K‘ plan helps. 5K is a distance that can be achieved after a few weeks, and we initially set up a 12 week plan in October 2016 with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up fitness and stamina. With encouragement from our team of trained coaches and experienced runners we created realistic expectations and made the challenge feel achievable. You may have seen the group running around the village of Barrow upon Soar.

As the initial plan was so successful, we decided to carry on into the New Year with the initial group, who were by then more advanced runners. Some of this group had done local 5K Parkruns. The scheme attracted further new runners into a second ‘Couch to 5K’ plan and this has since been extended until July due to popular demand.
