Tony and Diona’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary

Tony and Diona Kidger were married on March 22nd 1958 at St Gregory’s Roman Catholic Church in Sileby and the day before their wedding it snowed! In fact, you can see evidence of the snow on some of their wedding photographs taken 60 years ago. On their wedding day, Diona explained, there was no snow, in fact the sun shone all day, but the whole inside of the church shone with a multitude of white flowers. Not to reflect the snowy weather but something stipulated by the church authorities. The wedding took place during Lent so all the flower decorations had to be white, a stark contrast to the red carnations in Diona’s bouquet. The wedding breakfast was in the Catholic Church hall in Sileby with at least 90 guests, some of whom celebrated with them at their 60th.

They celebrated this occasion, on March 25th 2018, at the house of one of their daughters at Burton on the Wolds and guess what? It snowed! They were enjoying the party so much that it wasn’t until 11pm, and the first guests were about to leave, that they realised a blizzard had been raging outside. Thankfully everyone got home safely, although journeys had to be taken carefully and travel times were somewhat longer than usual.

Diona and Tony were teenage sweethearts, who met at a dance in the Unity Hall at Sileby, so they have known each other for more than 65 years.

They have two lovely daughters who, with their partners and their 4 special grandchildren, arranged their delightful celebration. I didn’t ask the two of them if they had a motto for a long and lasting relationship but they did seem most content with each other and fortunate to have their family nearby.
