New Look Barrow of Treats

In July, the Homefield College café and sweet shop, Barrow of Treats began the refurbishments of both their premises on Barrow High Street. I had the privilege of being invited to their official re-launch on October 4th, although a few, unnoticeable, final touches are still to be completed.

I was warmly welcomed by staff member, Helen who explained how the work had been funded and supported through a charitable initiative with Loughborough branch of DIAM – a global company who create, develop and install retail and merchandising solutions. This work has included alterations to the layout of the café, creating more customer space, with new cabinets and bespoke shelving in both the café and the shop.

Through these facilities, the community has come to know the part that Homefield College plays in providing opportunities for students with learning disabilities to gain realistic working experience, assisting them to gain skills and confidence. They are supported with professional guidance from paid staff. Many of these students are then able to progress into paid employment. The café and sweet shop have been tastefully decorated with new furniture to match the décor, new tablecloths will show some of the history of the buildings, and also a few basic Makaton signs to help customers with student communication if necessary.

There’s a new menu as well. I enjoyed the company and excellent customer care of students Ethan and Craig and a delicious pancake, with strawberries and cream, prepared by Katie, a past Homefield College student, now in employment at the café. The café has a most pleasant atmosphere, is bright and welcoming, the shop is colourful and orderly so on behalf of the Barrow Voice team I wish Homefield College and Barrow of Treats continued success in their vibrant, revamped premises.
