Many of you are aware that major things have been happening at the Methodist Church over the past six months. We would like to bring you up to date on what we have been doing and why we have done it.
The premises are used seven days a week by the church and community groups. The playgroup uses the hall, coffee lounge and kitchen five mornings and two afternoons a week, but during this time we cannot hold coffee mornings or lunches.
Access to the worship area was difficult because of steps and a very narrow aisle. The area was not well insulated and the heating system was old and inefficient. With all these points in mind, we started our development project to improve our premises for everyone.
To achieve these improvements we have made major changes. In the worship area we have removed the pews and levelled the floor. We have also created a new glass entrance, converted an inside wall to a glass bi-fold wall and created wide double glass doors. This gives level access from the pavement outside and provides a clear view from the pavement into the adaptable worship area.
We have created a new coffee lounge and kitchen adjacent to the new entrance which will be available throughout the week. The new, wider corridor provides a ramp to the existing hall. The corridor is considerably more open and there has been some rearrangement of storerooms and toilets.
The premises have a flexible eco-friendly heating system and new insulation, making the whole premises more comfortable, more efficient and reducing our carbon footprint. The work done on the premises will:
- Provide a worship area giving the opportunity for more flexible forms of worship
- Provide greater use of the premises for the church and the community to expand their activities
- Provide access to the whole of the premises for everyone
- Give an enhanced visual presence of the church on North Street
Already we have taken new community bookings for use of the premises in the New Year. When the project is complete we will hold a Community Open Day to which you are all welcome.
