Walking Football

 fun and fitness training together

If you want to lose some Christmas or Covid flab but you are not fit enough for intense sport and you don’t see the point of just walking with no purpose, have you thought of taking up walking football?

Barrow Town Football Club isn’t just about young, fit people, older people with dodgy knees can have fun too. I went down to the club one Monday evening to talk with the guys socialising and training … at a walking  pace(ish) as the perfume of ‘Deep Heat’ wafted around the training pitch.

“It started as a bit of fun, time for a bit of exercise, a bit of a laugh and a bit of reliving our youth when we could actually run!” captain Mick Greaves told me. Since April 2021, a group of 50 years old (ish) men have met to train and then they felt the pull of competition and joined the competitive league in Nottinghamshire. “Though you can come here and just enjoy the training evening, you don’t have to be in the competitive team,” Mick assured me. Women, he said, are welcome too. This kind of football is non-contact and so people of all sizes and fitness levels can enjoy it.

About half of the team have played football before, but age and injuries have slowed them down, the others have just taken it up because it’s fun and social exercise that they can do. Everyone is welcome to go along and have a go. If you decide it’s not for you, you don’t have to stay … you can just join them in the pub for a drink afterwards!

Members of team currently are (in alphabetical order): Steve Chamberlain (manager),
Ritch Clay, Kevin Cripps, Darren Eaton, Mick Greaves (captain), Steve Grew, Carl
Harrison, Nat Hunter, Steve Lord, Ritchie Marshall, Matt Reynolds, Simon Richards and
Colin Rue

If you run a local business and you want to put your name on the shirts of ‘mature men’, this may be the business deal you are looking for. You can be sure that your company name will not blur with the speed of sprinting – walking the pitch gives plenty of time for logos to be seen.

If you want to find out more, contact Simon Richards on srichards997@gmail.com, he’ll be happy to tell you all about it and invite you down to watch the training before joining in if you want. Contact Simon if you think this demographic exactly suits your business profile.
