Leicester and District Ramblers

As we look forward to the closing weeks of the winter season and the coming spring, we are excited about two important events in our calendar.   We are planning a one-off walk to celebrate the specially created trail celebrating the 10th Battalion who were billeted in Leicestershire in 1944 prior to their departure to their action in the "Market Garden" operation otherwise known as The Battle of Arnhem.  More details of this are below.

On a larger scale we are finally able to announce the reintroduction after a two year absence of our monthly coach rambles which usually happen on the third Sunday of each month – but there are three exceptions (highlighted with *), please contact David Wheeler for further information about these.

April 10* Buxton
May 15 Clent Hills
June 12* Castleton
July 17 Ironbridge
August 21 Bakewell
September 18 Rivelin Dams (near Sheffield)
October 16 Chipping Norton
November 20 Ashbourne
December 11* Broadway Christmas Special

Coaches are provided by Roberts Coaches of Coalville at a cost of £15 per person.

We hope to offer a choice of at least three walks: short (6-8 miles); medium (9 miles); and long (12-14 miles).  There may options for a shorter walk of four miles.

Most walks will be followed by a meal organised by Roberts Coaches.

The coach will leave the Premier Inn on Narborough Road at 8 am prompt.

There will be a short stop of 15 minutes en route.

The coach will leave the destination promptly at 5.30 pm in the summer months and 3.00 or 4.00 pm in the winter months.

We will operate online booking prior to the ramble, also for the meal if you are having one. Whilst these outings are laid on for members you can join any of these as a guest on the usual arrangement of walking with us for up to three times prior to taking out annual membership.

Special 10th Battalion Trail

On Thursday 21st April a special walk starting at 9.30am at All Saints Church in Somerby will be commemorating the 10th Battalion’s time in Leicestershire in 1944 before they headed off for the disastrous Battle of Arnhem.

The walk will include an ascent of the ancient Bronze Age Hill Fort at Burrough Hill and link together the several sites where personnel of the Battalion were stationed.

This is an all-day walk of 13 miles so please wear suitable walking shores and bring food and liquid with you.  Non-members are very welcome.
