Any fog over the river that night couldn’t have lingered! The vibes and volume emanating from Barrow’s library would have given it short shrift as this local rock-covers band belted out their sets. And the sets were varied ending with a seven-song tribute to Mick and his fellow Rolling Stones including Paint it Black, Jumping Jack Flash and Brown Sugar. At the end of this marathon vocalist Chris Middleton sounded a bit hoarse, looked a bit sweaty but tired and happy!
The evening was a successful fundraiser for Barrow Library as over 40 tickets were sold and the gig raised £297. The books had been pushed to the walls, the tables scattered around and ticket holders told to bring their own booze. People did: bottles of wine and beer soon appeared and with the colourful gig lighting reflecting off the shiny book spines the room was transformed.
But who are FOGG? The band is composed of five people; Dave Snutch on drums, Pete Beckett on lead guitar and mandolin, Chris Middleton vocals, Keith Butler on rhythm guitar and David Highton on bass.
It began as an offshoot of another local band The Potholes and members of this group, Colin Lockwood, Andy McWilliam and Anne Beckett played as guests for their last ever performance by joining Pete Beckett and Dave Snutch for Bad Moon Rising (Credence Clearwater Revival) and Let’s Stick Together (Roxy Music).
The audience knew most of the numbers as FOGG had chosen to play from the wide canon offered by Travis, The Who, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, REM, The Band, Green Day and of course The Beatles – Keith’s rendering of Here Comes the Sun was much enjoyed. And the wonderful Traveling Wilburys’ numbers Handle With Care and End Of The Line were played so well they managed to evoke the sound of the band of superstars who formed the original group.
