Football Finally came home
England 2 : Germany 1
You wouldn’t have known England was in the finals of the European Cup – the village pubs were relatively quiet.
There was no bunting or excited anticipation. Was everyone watching it at home? Did this match not have the heavy drinking culture that accompanies men’s football?
Barrow Voice’s roving photographer, Gaynor Barton, did manage to find Chris Padmore, Andrew Stagger Lee and friends enjoying the game at the Three Crowns.
Congratulations to the England’s team of Lionesses – if any young girls have been inspired, get in touch with Barrow Town Football Club and start playing!
Hard work and dedication have their rewards
Congratulations to Adam Tarnowski who, after years of hard work and dedication, has gained his Black Belt for Shotokan Karate. Adam, who trained at the LLS Karate club at Barrow’s Scout Hut with Sensei Danny Spence and Sensei Chloe Spence, will shortly be leaving to go off to Newcastle University to study marine science.
Congratulations, too, to Genevieve Silk who received her 2nd Dan. It’s about 10 years since Genevieve got her black belt with LLS Karate – but shortly after, left for university and then the world of work but when she came back to Barrow during lockdown, she decided to spend her time working towards her 2nd Dan with the club.
The grading for both ‘karatekas’ was overseen by Shihan (Master) Gordon Limmage (7th Dan) alongside Sensei Danny Spence and Sensei Chloe Spence.
If you are an adult wanting to start – or restart – karate or if you have children who are interested, contact Sensei Danny at LLS on 07986 064610; email ds.llskarate@gmail.com or visit www.llskarate.co.uk
Watch out for library book sales
Every so often Barrow Community Library sells off some of its old stock – for just 10p per book! Watch out for your next opportunity to pick up a bargain.
Barrow’s blooms will lift your spirits
Mr and Mrs Lewis’ display of colourful pots brought much pleasure over the summer to Sue Speight as she walked past their front garden. Sue couldn’t believe that she was the only one to have her spirits lifted by the “glorious array” and asked Barrow Voice to say “thank you” to the Lewises.
Terry Brookes in Ennerdale Road regularly takes over his neighbours’ front gardens (with their permission!) to create a complex and colourful display which delights young and old as they pass by. Watch out for his nativity scene this winter!
Shooting Close Lane
Network Rail started to demolish an old wall in Shooting Close Lane, part of Barrow’s conservation area but Cllr Pauline Ranson saw it and stopped them, as they did not have permission from the Borough Council. The workmen downed tools and left it as it is. Network Rail will need to apply for permission to continue the demolition, but here’s hoping that it will be refused!

Syston knitting 'Banksy'
The Syston knitting ‘Banksy’ made a wonderfully intricate decoration for the High Street post box – a “hat”. It celebrated the Under 12 Boys team of Barrow Town Football Club
