A Murder Mystery by Helen Sadler
Murder Mystery Sat, October 1st 2022, Humphrey Perkins School
Lord Oswin Danvers (Matt Gudger) is very pleased with himself. By marrying advantageously, he has saved the family fortunes that were so sadly squandered by his late father, Lord Oswald.
He had thought the only way out of his financial difficulties was to sell the town house, or perhaps even the mansion in Yorkshire. But chance saved him when he met Miss Sybil Brandon (Jackie Johnstone), an heiress. Her money came from trade, but you can’t have everything. Lord Oswin, with his charm and connections, could not fail to captivate Sybil, so he married her and set up home to make her happy – or not – as best he could. She does seem to have some rather odd ideas – she insists on reading his newspaper and going out to meetings – and never says what the meetings are about…
But Lord Oswin is uneasy in his mind – it seems that money has been going missing from the household – someone has their fingers in the till and the only and most discreet way to solve this knotty problem is to hire a Scotland Yard Detective. He couldn’t get Sergeant Cuff so this one, Inspector Flook (Neil Jones), will have to do.
In his household are the butler Munter (David Spiller), and housekeeper, Mrs Munter (Gaynor Barton), the faithful retainers who look after him well, and the cook who is famed for her cakes, Mrs Hannah Summers (Sharon Gudger). His house is known for its hospitality and Miss Charity Blackstock (Ginnie Willcocks) and friend Miss Emmeline Fenhurst (Val Gillings) are expected to take tea there today. Added to that, the chimney sweep, Edgar Stanley (Craig Johnstone), is demanding to see him – well he can demand all he likes. Lord Danvers is a member of the upper classes, not some bloke down the pub! Lord Danvers will have his hands full this evening… what a shame Lady Sybil has a meeting to attend…
