Coronation Time Capsule

Students from Humphrey Perkins School
with Jane Hunt, MP and the unearthed
time capsule

On Thursday 6th May, Humphrey Perkins School unveiled a piece of history. We, as a community, were lucky enough to find a time capsule from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth (1953) in Humphrey Perkins’ sports field. To celebrate this find and the coronation of a new monarch, we decided to follow on from Barrow’s past community and bury our own time capsule.

We were told about this capsule from a member of the community, Mrs Bradshaw, who phoned our school administration earlier in the week to tell us about the secret capsule under the field. As a school, Humphrey Perkins was very excited as it added to our community events for the King’s coronation.

We decided that a group of staff and students along with Mrs Bradshaw and the local MP, Jane Hunt, would hold a small gathering to bury our own time capsule. During this gathering I was lucky enough to talk with both Jane Hunt and Mrs Bradshaw about the late Queen and the upcoming coronation. Through this I learned a lot about the local community and their celebrations of the current coronation and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth.

To conclude, Humphrey Perkins was very happy to find a piece of local history on site and add to the coronation celebration. As Mrs Bradshaw said Humphreys and the local community had an amazing time celebrating the coronation of “a new type of king for a very different age”.
