In my opinion nothing sums up summer more than the sound of a ball on willow. I am talking about the great game of cricket. So, one warm sunny day I wandered down to Barrow Town Cricket Ground on Nottingham 
Road and was fortunate enough to watch a Juniors coaching session.

You may remember that a few Barrow Voice issues ago, we covered the question of how flooding had affected the cricket ground and the work that had to be done by John Upton, their chief groundsman. The ground 
today is beautifully presented with a fully functioning clubhouse and spacious patio area for spectators. 

I spoke to the chairman, John Williamson, who explained that they welcome children into their junior programme from as young as five years old. There are over 80 young people in its thriving junior section which plays in the Leicestershire League which is divided into county areas.

As I was once a cricketer myself, I asked if they had a dedicated girls’ team. John explained that they had quite a few girls who play, but would love to form girls only teams.

The club can boast of having 12 fully qualified coaches who train at all the levels. The club runs a summer camp as well as weekly sessions.

With so many different formats that have been introduced into the game, there is something for everybody to enjoy. You don’t have to be a player to be involved with the club. Volunteers are always welcome, whether that’s for keeping the scoring card or getting involved with the social side.
