Joy of Music

Musical activities to promote better mental health

Joy of Music is a new charity in Charnwood Borough dedicated to fostering music appreciation and creation in a supportive environment for individuals with mild mental health challenges, such as depression, social isolation, anxiety, and early-stage dementia or Alzheimer’s. Recognising that mental health is integral to overall well-being, Joy of Music seeks to address emotional issues often stigmatised by society. Through music engagement, the charity aims to foster positive aspirations.

The idea for Joy of Music originated from members of Charnwood’s Social Prescribing Team, who noticed a demand for music- based activities, which research indicates can significantly aid stress recovery, symptoms of depression, and lower anxiety/ blood pressure/heart rate. Deven Stuart, a talented musician from Barrow Upon Soar who has supported his own emotional challenges through music, co-leads the charity with his colleague Ian Grayling from Quorn. Deven, also the director of Leicester Music Lessons Ltd, is passionate about using music to support others.

The charity benefits from the oversight and support of a diverse group, including a Green Party councillor, an academic/ musician, a retired educationalist/musician, a lay pastor, and professionals from the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and the Charnwood Social Prescribing Team.

Beneficiaries of Joy of Music must be at least 18 years old and can self-refer via by visiting https://services.thejoyapp.com/en/listings/15921-joy-of-music, or check in with their GP surgery’s Social Prescribing Team to assess suitability. Sessions are held at the Sileby Methodist Church, offering shared musical experiences to enhance well-being and social engagement. Activities focus on active listening, making music, musical mindfulness, rhythm, and harmony.
